New font installation to GIMP and Inkscape (OS Windows)

Usually fonts installed to the system are available to the programs. So each of them must be installed to the system. Some programs ask user to select a separate folder containing the pluggible fonts.

To install a custom font in Windows XP follow the next steps:

In most of cases it's not enough just move a chosen font to the dir %WINDIR%\Fonts (usually C:\Windows\Fonts) for it using in applications.

After font installation reboot GIMP if it has been runned.
This way make the font available for any application, including Inkscape.
To install a font available for only one application there are another ways.

Font installation (only for GIMP)

Instead font installation to the system in GIMP you can just point a dir where they are located. For that you have to perform the following two steps:

Step 1. Move chosen fonts to the separate folder.

Step 2. Open Preference window (Edit > Preference). In the left side of the windows select item Folders, after that select item Fonts. Specify a path to the folder where GIMP will search for the fonts.

After restarting GIMP fonts will be available for use.

noteAttention

This method is applicable for GIMP 2.6.11 (OS Windows), but in earler releases it did not work. The trouble was in cache-file generated during installation. It can be resolved either by deleting of this file or installing fonts to the system.
